Anson: Okay. To live the core values is incredibly challenging because this is a review of their character. All these kids that were substandard, I would kill myself to try to get them there, burning just so much energy on these people that didnt end up helping me much anyway, but I did transform them to a small degree. They get to see exactly where they are on it. In other words, you were so incredibly demanding. And then basically getting their personal narrative to the truth and my opinion, those are the three most critical things about what my responsibility here is for these wonderful kids I get to train. I mean, hes incredibly demanding and yet you can feel his love for you. And I absolutely loved everything in his book. Anson: And she and I are good friends, and so Im going to work with her, and Im hoping through some of her psychological profiles she can sort out character because I would love to have that as a tool that I can use before a kid gets here. And what we do with a cauldron is were trying to figure out a way within the context of our practice to get everyone to compete like theres no tomorrow. And of course your mom totally agrees with you. Theyll know if their preparation isnt good enough coming into the session. And I called her up to sort of vet him. What is our test? Why arent they there? I like that core value. Another buzzer goes off, they sprint to the water and then another buzzer goes off 30 seconds later, theyre done with their water break. Each year the players grade themselves and their teammates on the extent to which they embody the core values. Every coach wants their kid to play at the University of North Carolina. And in changing that and sending then in the right direction all of a sudden a substandard player goes to a different level because now shes finally accountable for performance, whereas earlier she had a narrative that protected her from being responsible and accountable, and now all of a sudden we expose that, and now shes selected to be more accountable and her game goes to a completely different level. So anyway, we got her to shut up and we made a nice run. And so it was really, it was eye-opening for me. So this is where were trying to drive them. And were notwere flexible. Because obviously almost every kid we recruit on scholarship has the dream of playing professionally, so almost every one of our scholarship kids does sign a professional contract. I am a member of a conservative church. Anson: Well, actually, Im reading all the time, but most of the ideas we bring in practice dont come directly from the reading, they just come from us looking at this thinking you know what, this isnt working. Im sitting with them and we are parsing the data together. But the real star of the show was Jack Welch. And so often time its not just the training environment thats critical for us, its how we can get into, again, the mindset of the players to get them to change a certain mindset or a narrative thats protecting them from getting to their potential. Yep, I dont compete because theyre giving themselves numbers underneath a 4, which is what is required of them to start, and they are telling me they shouldnt start, and Im agreeing with them, because I dont start them. So these kids Im coaching right now come from a culture where their parents think theyre Gods gift or whatever. So we stole this idea, we soccer-ized it, we took it to a new level. And he believes in creating community, he believes in treating people exceptionally well. Because I rode this kid, I knew what her potential was and if she has this extraordinary potential now, Anson Im the best on the team at this, and youre not happy. Podcasts for me are great. Anson: Well, to transfer you let them know thatand usually a person that wants, the person thats really below the line is someone that isnt playing much, usually, and so as a result, you know, behind your back theyre whining about everything under the sun, which, by the way, goes completely counter to our first core value, which is we dont whine. What have you found on the developing coaches side that maybe would, if I was a business owner out there thinking about how do I build my senior leadership team? Now is the period to escape the protection of loving parents that dont want you to get hurt. You have 4 years to get ready for the chaos at the university. Instead of a feverish selfish, little clod of ailments and grievances complaining the world will not devote itself to making you happy. That is my George Bernard Shaw quote about not being a frigging whiner. Melissa: Yes. The second priority is their academic success. My favorite moment, every time I would hear him speak, was when he would tell everyone in the room that every single year fire, the bottom 10% of your workforce, everyone in the room would gasp. And its an article written about this woman that attended Columbia University, and she was sent there to study for a Ph.D. in Russian literature and Russian poetry. This woman said this was transformational. Then all of a sudden. And now hes compiling that days practice data. Many of the values are drawn from books on leadership, and they are illustrated by a diverse set of symbols and quotations. Then finally, its their soccer success. And thats one of the greatest compliments Ive ever received, even though its sort of framed as a backhanded compliment. In the performance review a lot of the review is done by themselves, because what most of us have is we all develop a personal narrative. Anson: So as a result no woman wants to take this mantle on because they know what everyones saying about them behind their back. But if we started having all of these, you know, kids take the, you know, Angela Duckworth grit test or, you know, some sort of, you know, psychological profile or take my core value test, wed lose them, and the word would get out that, you know, thats how were evaluating them, and it would kill us. And as far as Im concerned, if her average is over a 3.0, in other words she lives these core values most of the time, we completely embrace her, because thats what we want everyone to live. Its not to save the world or to save people. When we call them and ask them about the character of their kid, theyre not going to say oh my god, the kids toxic. Anson: Well, yeah, because basically Im listening to this guy and hes absolutely right.
